Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice that aims to restore balance and promote homeostasis in the human body. This is achieved through the stimulation of specific points using sterile, ultra-thin needles. In addition to needle insertion, our acupuncturist may incorporate other techniques such as cupping, guasha, electro-stimulation and moxibustion.

What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a holistic healing system dating back thousands of years. Rooted in the principles of balance and harmony within the body, TCM views health as the result of the smooth flow of vital energy, known as Qi (pronounced "chee"). Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points along energy pathways, or meridians, to restore the balance of Qi and promote the body's natural healing process. This ancient practice is used to treat a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain and stress to digestive issues and insomnia, providing a gentle and effective alternative approach to wellness.

Traditional Chinese Medicine encompasses a comprehensive range of therapies beyond acupuncture, including herbal medicine, cupping, and tai chi, all designed to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. By addressing not only the symptoms but also the underlying imbalances within the body, TCM aims to promote long-term health and vitality. With its emphasis on individualized care and holistic principles, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer a unique perspective on wellness that continues to resonate with people seeking natural and sustainable healthcare solutions

What to Expect

Step 1: Discovery Journey

Please complete a detailed online questionnaire covering personal information, health complaints, family health history, diet, lifestyle, and bodily functions, which typically takes 30-45 minutes. We aim to understand all aspects of your health, including symptoms you might not think are related to your main concern. Your insights help us gain a comprehensive perspective.

Step 2: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Diagnosis Methods

A) Physical Examination: This includes structural checks, muscle palpation, and assessments like range of motion (ROM), strength, or nerve exams if necessary.
B) Pulse Diagnosis: We identify organ function imbalances according to TCM principles, focusing on functional rather than anatomical aspects.
C) Tongue Diagnosis: Please don't be concerned about cleaning your tongue beforehand; the condition of your tongue provides valuable diagnostic clues.

Step 3: Personalized Treatment Plan, Goal Setting, and Cost

Based on our assessment and data, we will provide a TCM diagnosis, create a personalized treatment plan, set achievable goals collaboratively, and discuss associated costs.

Step 4: Commencing Your TCM Journey

Once you've decided to proceed with the treatment plan, we'll schedule sessions. Consistency is crucial for restoring balance and enabling you to pursue your daily activities with joy and happiness. Acupuncture: Our aim is not to replace bodily functions but to facilitate self-healing and reduce inflammation naturally. Chinese Herbal Medicine: Supplementing the body's resources can enhance progress, but outcomes depend on consistent treatment and your body's response.
Step 5: Progress Reassessment
Upon completing the scheduled sessions, we arrange a follow-up assessment to evaluate progress and refine our goals accordingly. This ongoing evaluation ensures that we stay aligned with your health objectives.

FAQs

Is acupuncture covered by ACC?

ACC partially covers the cost of Acupuncture treatments for accident-related injuries where a claim has been approved by ACC. Once you have an ACC45 claim number from your GP, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists or other health provider, you can book in for treatment of related injury for a set amount of time. Our Acupuncturist is one of the members of Acupuncture NZ and they are recognised by ACC as a treatment provider.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe when practised by a qualified practitioner. Our Acupuncturist has completed a four-year full-time Bachelors in Health Science (Acupuncture) and a three-year Diploma in Chinese Herbal Medicine. Our premium Acupuncture needles are pre-sterilised, single-use needles. They are safe and painless to use, and safely discarded after the treatment.

What if I’m afraid of needles? Does it hurt?

There is no need to be afraid of the needles. The needles are as thin as your hair and definitely not like the needles used for injections. Most people don’t even feel the insertion and those who do, describe it as being pinched by their friend. A small prick sensation or tingling may initially occur, or a dull sensation. During the session, some people may feel a sense of calm or a subtle flow of energy throughout their bodies. Any feelings or if you are worried or unsure, you should be communicated to your acupuncturist so that they can make any necessary modifications to ensure your comfort during the treatment.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with acupuncture?

When performed by a qualified acupuncturist, acupuncture is generally safe. However, there are potential risks and side effects to consider, although they are usually minimal. Commonly reported side effects include mild and temporary soreness or bruising at the needle insertion sites. Temporary fatigue or dizziness may also occur after a session but can be relieved through rest and hydration.

What if I am late or I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

Multiple text reminders will be sent out at various times. Sometimes life happens and despite your best efforts, you may need to cancel. Best to call or text at the earliest possible – somebody else may be able to use that time slot. You will be required to pay for a then-on-attendance fee of $80 if the cancellations are made with less than 12 hours' notice Your appointment will still end at the designated time if you are late. If our practitioner decides there is not enough time to properly complete a treatment, your appointment may be cancelled at your own cost and 50% will be charged.
